A popular form of photography is photojournalism, this is when a photograph tells an important story. To the right is an image taken by Lynsey Addario, a photographer for TIME magazine, of a diamond mine in Africa that still uses slavery. It is common for the pallet of photojournalism photography to be quite dull and possessing a large amounts of earthy colours and rarely features vibrant colours. It is often taken from a high angle or mid shot and is almost never taken from a low angle looking up at the subject. This photography is most useful when reporting on news of a serious topic or to convey a serious issue such as poverty. This photography doesn't necessarily have to be bland and boring, however, is often is made boring due to a lack of creative vision, as well as a lack of personality such as lack of picture editing (e.g: black and white filter).

Another popular form of photography is architectural photography. Architectural photography doesn't necessarily have to be of pretty buildings. Take this photo to the left by Simon Kennedy for example, although the building themselves are very bland and ugly, he uses a mixture of photography techniques such as the leading lines as well as the fog creating a fade to make he buildings look as if they continue endlessly.

Rowan Park, Merton, for Sheppard Robson-Simon Kennedy

Here is another photograph taken by Simon Kennedy, ass you can see he uses a low angle shot in order to make the buildings look more grand. He also chooses to take the photograph at twilight (the moment between night and day) as that is commonly when photographs of landscapes or of anything the photographer wants to look grand is taken. Another good choice hat Simon Kennedy made while asking this photograph is o do it overlooking the water, this is effective as it shows the reflections of the interesting building shapes on the water. Photographs like this are commonly used for Magazine covers, galleries as well as advertisements. Although this photo has been edited and shot in a way to make the buildings look good it still remains to be realistic enough to appear in National Geographic for example. However, some may not like this photo as it makes the buildings look better than they are in reality.

Max Rive

Landscape photography is often used to portray the beauty of the world around us. I like the photographer Max Rive from the Netherlands as he often includes man made structures like buildings, towns or people to show the scale of the monolithic mountains towering over buildings. He also quite often uses the rule of thirds, but in a way not may people do. Instead of putting the building to the left or right power line he chooses to put buildings regularly on the bottom power line and the mountain peak at the top power line. The image is also obviously also heavily edited with things like saturation and contrast being boosted. To some this may be a bad thing as some feel this makes the image fake as well as a lie and as such a photograph like this is unlikely to appear in a magazine like national geographic as it is not true to life and as such would be more fitting fora gallery or a fantasy book.

Here is another example by Max Rive, As you can see the photograph is horizontally composed with the mountain peaks once again being on the top power line this thus makes the photograph a horizontally composed image, this means that the image uses the horizontal power lines as apposed to the vertical ones. The person in the photograph is centred and small as to not get in the way of the main subject, being the mountain range. The photographer has also chosen to use a dull colour pallet for the foreground with the person , however, Although the mountain range itself is also fairly dull in places the sky uses a bright blue to contrast the mountain range as to make them pop out more. This may be unappealing to some audiences however. The photo is also edited in a way that he can get the sun rays and two images (one being low exposure, one with high exposure) so that he can capture both the dark's and the light's as well as the contrast being boosted. However, as this photograph has been heavily edited, to some his may be seen as a disadvantage as the photograph is o longer realistic. Thus this is the kind of photograph o appear on a book cover or as concept art for a video game, but it would not appear in a national geographic magazine as it is too unrealistic.
